Black History Month 2024

RECAP of 2023

WOW, last year was quite a busy year.  Once again, 2023 started with some grief as two uncles and two extended family members made their transitions. I spent the first few months adjusting to retirement from my corporate position and a new schedule, planned a retirement party, enrolled in my last two required electives for the doctoral program, and kicked off my research.

I also traveled a bit: to Miami for a dear friend’s memorial and to the Midwest to see relatives. I spent about eight months working on a presentation for the Parliament of World Religions held in Chicago in August. Pictured below are the Spiritual Leaders for Peace and Justice with whom I had the pleasure of co-presenting a two-part workshop “Is Racism Fake News” that featured such topics as environmental racism, the impact of globalization, the rise of White Christian Nationalism, micro-aggressions, and an experiential face-to-face restorative practice. Click here to view the highlights from the PoWR convention. The 2023 theme was: A Call to Conscience: Defending Freedom & Human Rights.

Oh yes! And I did some singing in 2023, of course (online and in person). I am STILLL singing!

More Joy in 2024

I plan to maintain this website until I can reconstruct a new one with new material from my dissertation. Stay tuned…it’s coming! In the meantime, I will be heads down, hard at work this year – – praying and affirming that my doctoral dissertation will speak from the depths of my heart the insights and divine ideas that have been shaping and forming over these past three years around Joy and Justice. Sometimes, it ain’t easy, but I am keeping the faith! I feel strengthened by God, knowing the Divine Presence has already gone before me to make the crooked places straight. I KNOW WHERE MY HELP COMES FROM!

Black History Reflections

I hope to step it up this year and write more than the “annual” blog though (LOL!) For Black History Month, here is a little slide show that I have worked on all month while reflecting on the joy of my mother’s album collection. She passed away in 1999. Gospel music was certainly a big JOY BOOSTER for her! So, this is some of my own personal history and memories of growing up in a house filled with the Gospel music that lifted us and encouraged us along the way, particularly through the Civil Rights movement. Thank you, Mama, the music plays on…and this JOY is STILL my strength!

Until next time, stay blessed! I pray that you will be filled with joy, peace, and love always! Bye for now. Yours in light and love, Rev. Dinah

There’s Joy in it…

smallbutterfly

Within the first few months of seminary in 2013, I had the pleasure of taking an elective, and I was not quite sure what I was getting myself into. It was simply called the Peace Seminar and the description sounded interesting enough, about how we can create a world that works for everyone. Well, there were enough things happeninShaiff IMG_6723g in the world, that made me go hmmmm…. So how do we, who claim to follow in the footsteps of Jesus, engage in our world in a way that will allow us to shift to a higher way of being, doing, and having that alleviates suffering and the agonizing pangs of not enough-ness? It was a tough, challenging class taught by Dr. Shariff Abdullah, (center of photo) who has made his life’s work and spiritual practice all about inclusivity.  Shariff Abdullah says in his book, Creating A World that Works for All,

“My work is my spiritual practice, and Commonway Institue is my principal vehicle for that practice. The institute’s focus is inclusivity – – teaching the theory, philosophy, and practice of the inextricable linkage between our individual lives and The Other. The links already exist; we just help people become conscious of them…We humans have much more that unites us than separates us. Commonly helps people see that.” (Chapter 3 Inclusivity–Spirit and Practice, page 63)

Little did I know that this class and this work would dig down into the core of me and resonate so strongly, so that years later I am still passionate about what Shariff Abdullah and Commonway Institute are doing. Through much of 2013, 2014, 2015, however, I could not understand the disconnect of seeing symptoms in our society of great dis-ease, fragmentation, and exclusivity driving the actions and reactions in our nation, and on the other hand seeing basically no higher ground operatives ready to meet the challenge of this atmosphere head on.

So here we are in 2017, and I asked myself “what’s changed?” We are all praying, asking what is ours to do, and finding our vehicles for taking action in some form of spiritual social activism in our own way. The headlines continue to be hurled at us ceaselessly and endlessly. I often hear within my own heart, ” do what’s in front of you.” Wherever we are working along the spectrum of healing the world, it is ALL needed.

IMG_8500Maybe this work of inclusivity is not sexy or glitzy enough for everyone to jump on the bandwagon in droves. However, I believe when enough people get sick and tired of being sick and tired…they’ll wake up and realize that instead of hacking away at the symptoms that are manifesting on the surface, we’ll begin to also work the deeper work of shifting our collective consciousness and awareness to the underlying spiritual aspects and qualities of our humanity and our divinity. Then we can find that pearl of great price — our linkage, our spiritual heritage that allows us to live in unified, divine harmony in the beloved community and be as One.

I’ve prayed, I’ve asked what is mine to do, and one thing is to bring people together who believe it’s possible to live, collaborate, dialog and make changes that come from a place of inclusivity and not exclusivity. Are you passionate about taking some action and don’t know where to start? A good place to start would be to engage in Dr. Shariff Abdullah’s Shadow-to-Light workshops. Working on a personal/individualistic level is fine if that is all you can do, however, working on the collective, greater system and institutional level is very much needed as well.

My action and activity over the next 12 weeks is to facilitate Dr. Shariff Abdullah’s powerfully transforming workshops called the Shadow-to-Light (S2L) Program, starting Sept. 5 at Unity of San Leandro in San Leandro, CA. There’s still time to sign up if you want to join in shifting the energy on the planet from the shadows to LIGHT……I will be the local lead facilitator inviting 12 other transformation catalysts to attend who also want to see a world transformed to higher ground. We need people from all walks of life, no matter your race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, or political affiliation. For more information and to sign up, go to:  unitysanleandro.org/special-events. We would love to have the synergy of face-to-face dialog, but if you are not near this workshop in the Bay Area or in your area, go to the online version of the workshop: Online Solo S2L Course

Together – Let us embrace and usher in the LIGHT!

Peace & blessings,

Rev. Dinah

Sound Connections Music Conference

This past week I released my new CD at the Sound Connections Music Conference in Lee’s Summit, MO. It was a great week of spiritual renewal and quite inspirational to see so many musicians and music directors passionately sharing something we love – – MUSIC! It was fantastic even from the beginning of the week sharing the shuttle out to Unity Village with Meghan, Julie, Kathy, and Robin! My Shuttlemates!

On Tuesday night I had the pleasure of singing “Touching the Stillness” at the Silent Spirit Sharing circle. And it received very positive feedback!  There was so much talent from so many churches. I felt so blessed and honored to be in their company!

Once I got past a little jet lag, I took in a few workshops with Melanie Jewell (Musician’s Guide to Enhancing Meditation), Fred Bogert (Getting Started with Sibelius), Bukeka Shoals and Chaz Wesley (Surrender Adventure), and JD Martin and Jan Garrett (The Harmony of Songwriting). They were all fantastic!

The big “finale” night was Thursday night. We dined at the Conference Banquet and enjoyed performances by the Unity World Orchestra and the Unity World Chorus. Following the banquet, the Grace Note Award was presented to Karen Taylor Good for her outstanding contribution to New Thought music. To top off the night, Jan Garrett, JD Martin, and Megon McDonough gave a concert.

All in all, it was a super week! It was fun seeing old and new friends. (Great catching up and having lunch with you, Rev. Paulette and Jenny!) Oh yes, and I was able to place my CD for sale in the Unity Village bookstore!

Thank you all for supporting me in my musical adventure! I leave you with this little phrase that Jan Garrett shared with us on Wednesday….it went something like this:

“Words suggest a path, …music takes us there.”

Blessings,

Dinah

Asilomar Conference 2010!

“Enlighten UP!” was the theme for this year’s Unity Western Central Region’s Conference. It was a great time for me to rejuvenate and walk by the ocean, AND to meet and greet with many long-time friends and new friends! Who knew??? that on the first day I arrived at the conference I happened to get in line for dinner right next to Edwene Gaines, the keynote speaker and author of The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity- – A Simple Guide to Unlimited Abundance!!  Of course, I just had to let her know that her book was the very first book I used to teach my first class on abundance back in June 2010, and what a tremendous blessing the book had been to me. It was confirmation that I WAS on the right track after getting out from under over $100,000 worth of debt. I am so grateful for the opportunity to meet her and hear her speak on Friday night and Saturday morning. She was AMAZING! If you want to turn your life around and are tired of going around in circles and living from paycheck to paycheck, read her book, The Four Spiritual Laws of Prosperity.  I wish everyone I know could have heard her!

It was great seeing all of you at Asilomar (you know who you are) – – all the folks from Vacaville, Fremont, Walnut Creek, Richmond, San Leandro, Davis, Castro Valley, San Francisco, YOU ROCK! And let’s not forget Greg Tamblyn, thanks for sharing your humor, wit, and your music. I had the pleasure of jamming on one song with David Deerfeeder and the Wingers on Saturday evening. What a blessing and pleasant surprise it was when he called me up to sing with them on “The Lord Is My Shepherd.” Man! we were jammin’ for God! All in all, what I good time I had down by the sea. I am so very grateful. I felt even more aligned with my purpose by just being surrounded by the loving, supportive energy of everyone I met. I look forward to the next Western Central Region event no matter where or when it takes place. There’s nothing like it! Well, until we meet again. Be at peace.

Love and many blessings,

Dinah
